He replied, “You took the gods I made, and my priest, and went away. What else do I have? How can you ask, ‘What’s the matter with you?’ ” The Danites answered, “Don’t argue with us, or some of the men may get angry and attack you, and you and your family will lose your lives.” So the Danites went their way, and Micah, seeing that they were too strong for him, turned around and went back home. Then they took what Micah had made, and his priest, and went on to Laish, against a people at peace and secure. They attacked them with the sword and burned down their city. There was no one to rescue them because they lived a long way from Sidon and had no relationship with anyone else. The city was in a valley near Beth Rehob. The Danites rebuilt the city and settled there. They named it Dan after their ancestor Dan, who was born to Israel—though the city used to be called Laish. There the Danites set up for themselves the idol, and Jonathan son of Gershom, the son of Moses, and his sons were priests for the tribe of Dan until the time of the captivity of the land. They continued to use the idol Micah had made, all the time the house of God was in Shiloh. (Judges 18:24-31 NIV)
Micah had all the "holy" stuff taken forcefully form him and he could not do anything about it. In today's world if someone took something from us, we would complain to the authorities and they would take action. So if the situation happened today, the men would have been all arrested. It really tells us that we are blessed to have authority over us, to have the government over us. Because they deliver judgement. Interestingly, the yardstick of judgement is the law and the parts of the law is actually derived from the bible. The 10 commandments is one fine example. Authority over us is from God.
See here:
Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God
has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. (Romans 13:1, 2 NIV)
So we should obey authority because it is instituted by God. Authority comes from the government, school, church and homes. And we should obey them and make their work a joy:
Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account. Do this so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no benefit to you. (Hebrews 13:17 NIV)
This passage really shows me that it is really a blessing from God to have authority over us. Because it leads us, corrects us and let's us mature. And when we are in trouble, they will always protect us.
And every authority is from God.
So we should obey!
